Top Military to Civilian Careers ? hot news

Before entering into the domain of any career, you must know the basics of how to get chosen. Well, the basic rather the first step of it is to write a military to civilian resume that will be attractive as well as accepted in all places.

When you search for a job and post your resume your motto is to generate response from your employers, so here you have to do the same thing but there is a slight difference. The difference being a shift from a very rigorously experienced field to a civilian post for which you have to know the tricks of military to civilian resume writing.

So if you were in the military forces, then you must have had enough regimentation in your life, and when you have decided to make a shift at the civilian job sector, then military to civilian resume writing must be taken into special consideration.

To make yours standout among others, this impression is quite essential. You have to let go of all the military nuances from your professional life and your resume because you are making a transition. Sure, it might take you a few good days to settle in, but then, if this is what you are planning for then just know a few basic things.

The resume

You have to be receptive and have a simple approach while you make your resume because military to civilian resume has to be made pertaining to civilian organizations, not military ones. You should be concise, and use proper keywords and when you make your statements, it is recommended not to go into deeper details of what you have done in which military regime and where.

You can add these details in a precise manner so that your value is maintained. Military to civilian transition is something that takes a long time to decide and if you have made up your mind, then there is no looking back.

The purpose

If you want to help the society or want to join a corporate firm then make sure you are able to make your point clear in your resume pertaining to the job profile and criteria of your employer. It should not have a strict tone, or a demanding tone, so let your wish know, only by making it acceptable by your employers.

When writing a military to civilian resume you should be able to make your employees understand why you want to make this transition, and this explanation should be based on solid facts. There may have been various pressures or your own free will for which you want to be a civilian, so make sure to explain such in a fine fashion.

You should not go on and on about discipline etc. instead highlight your leadership skills and your ability to do proper team work, because in the army you have been taught these efficiently. Despite such basic things you have nothing to worry about the technicalities of your military to civilian resume.

(AP) ? Federal prosecutors investigating the West Virginia coal mine explosion that killed 29 men are working their way up the corporate ladder with criminal charges.

On Wednesday, the former superintendent of the Upper Big Branch mine became the highest-ranking company official charged in the 2010 disaster, and he is apparently cooperating with prosecutors, who said the investigation is far from over.

Gary May, 43, was charged with conspiracy to defraud the government, accused among other things of disabling a methane gas monitor, falsifying safety records and using code words to tip off miners underground about surprise inspections.

He could get up to five years in prison if found guilty.

The only other Massey Energy employee prosecuted so far in the nation's deadliest mining disaster in four decades is former mine security chief Hughie Elbert Stover, who will be sentenced next week for lying to investigators and trying to destroy documents.

Prosecutors are urging a federal judge to make an example of Stover by giving him the maximum ? 25 years in prison.

The charges against May were contained in what is known as a federal information, a document that typically signals a defendant is cooperating with prosecutors. Reached at his home Wednesday, May declined to comment.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said his investigation is "absolutely not" finished, but he would not comment further. Prosecutors routinely cut deals with lower-ranking figures to help them build cases against higher-ranking ones.

Clay Mullins, who worked at Upper Big Branch and lost his brother Rex in the blast, said more people deserve to be prosecuted, including former Massey CEO Don Blankenship.

"I want to see some other names," he said. "There were a lot of people involved in this, and I just want to see them be punished for the crimes."

Prosecutors have refused to say whether they are targeting Blankenship, a hard-nosed executive whose company was cited for violations so frequently that union critics accused him of regarding fines as simply the cost of doing business.

Blankenship, once one of the most outspoken leaders in the coal industry, retired months after the explosion and moved away from West Virginia. A telephone number for him could not be found, and he has all but disappeared from public view since the blast.

A United Mine Workers report said Blankenship was among 18 Massey employees who invoked their right against self-incrimination and refused to cooperate with any of the investigations.

Alpha Natural Resources of Bristol, Va., bought Massey and all its operations, including the Upper Big Branch mine, last summer.

Prosecutors have accused Massey of violating a host of safety laws out of a desire to put production and profits first.

Three investigations of the tragedy concluded that the company allowed highly explosive methane and coal dust to build up inside the mine, where it was ignited by a spark from an improperly maintained piece of cutting equipment.

Clogged and broken water sprayers then allowed what could have been just a flare-up to become an epic blast, the investigations found.

Prosecutors said May manipulated the mine ventilation system during inspections to fool safety officials and disabled a methane monitor on a cutting machine a few months before the explosion. It wasn't clear from court papers whether the device was ever fixed.

Although other mine accidents have led to criminal charges, prosecutors have typically targeted low-ranking employees.

"I hope they can go up, and I think they will," said Gary Quarles, whose son Gary Wayne died in the explosion.

Quarles said he was surprised the charges reached so high into the ranks.

"It's about time," he said. "It's a good start."

How payroll tax gridlock in Congress finally came unstuck

A deal to prolong the payroll tax cut has also paved the way for Congress to extend long-term unemployment benefits and the Medicare 'doc fix' to the end of the year.?

A surprise shift by House Republicans to extend a payroll tax cut ? without requiring offsetting spending cuts ? broke an impasse over two other measures now set for votes in the House and Senate on Friday.

If Congress passes and the president signs this package into law, as expected:

  • Americans will no longer see a 2 percent hike in payroll taxes.
  • Doctors serving Medicare patients will no longer face a 27 percent drop in reimbursement.
  • Long-term jobless workers won?t immediately lose their extended benefits.

All the provisions were set to expire on Feb. 29. In a bid to pay for these features, the unemployed will be eligible for fewer weeks of benefits, beginning in June. Some will face new requirements, such as drug testing, to access them. And new federal hires will be required to pay more for their pensions than current federal workers.?

Until Monday, House Republicans had demanded offsets for the $100 billion cost of extending the 2 percent cut in the Social Security payroll tax, from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent. They said that the payroll tax holiday was not, in fact, a tax cut, because it relied on taxpayer dollars to make up for the uncollected revenues in the Social Security trust fund.

But in the end, the political pressure on House GOP leaders to avoid what would seem to be a tax hike was simply too high.

?The agreement that?s been reached to stop a tax hike on middle class Americans is a fair agreement and one that I support,? said Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio, in a briefing with reporters on Thursday.

?But let?s be honest,? he added. ?This is an economic-relief package, not a bill that?s going to grow the economy and create jobs.?

Some Democrats agree that the tax cuts should have been offset by revenues. They want the Bush tax cuts, which expire Dec. 31, to be offset and see a bad precedent in the current deal.?

?By taking this action, we?re saying that tax cuts somehow don?t have to be paid for,? said Sen. Mark Warner (D) of Virginia in a floor speech on Thursday.??We?re advancing a policy that I believe will come back to haunt us later this year when the Bush tax cuts expire.?

Other Democrats?are mounting an 11th-hour protest against extending the Social Security payroll tax cut, saying it undermines Social Security.?The deal mandates that revenue not collected by the Social Security Trust Fund through the payroll tax be replaced out of taxpayer dollars in the US Treasury's General Fund.?

Prospect Heights officials offer voter incentives to approve home rule ...

Prospect Heights officials are offering financial incentives and promising safeguards against tax increases if voters will only pass the home rule referendum item on the March 20 primary ballot.

And to make sure voters know what?s at stake, aldermen voted Monday to spend $16,000 for two months of communications services from Chicago-based consulting firm Serafin & Associates, Inc.?? an effort that could cost another $10,000 of city money for mailings and other communications to residents.

All that comes on top of a series of information meetings planned for various town locations, the first of which was sparsely attended.

In a resolution passed unanimously Monday, aldermen voted to cut taxes and fees, but only if the home rule referendum passes. The deal provides for a 25 percent cut in the existing property tax rate, a $5 cut in the fee for the $70 vehicle sticker, elimination of the $1 mail-in processing fee for stickers, elimination of the fee for tags for animals, and a freeze on garbage and solid waste fees.

All the changes and reductions are contingent on the home rule referendum passing. With passage, the changes in vehicle stickers and animal tags would take effect May 1, 2013. The other changes would go into effect on May 1 of this year.

In Illinois, home rule allows municipalities greater flexibility in establishing taxes, financing municipal operations and spending, using tax revenues and regulating zoning and other issues that might otherwise be subject to state rules.

Mayor Nick Helmer and others have said home rule would allow the city to tap into some existing revenue sources that aren?t available without home rule, in particular the city?s hotel and motel tax. Under state rules, in a non-home rule community like Prospect Heights that money must go to promoting convention business and tourism. Under home rule, the money could go to the city?s general fund to pay for road repairs, police officers and other expenses.

?The only way we?re going to get recurring revenue is through home rule,? Helmer said.

Helmer said the hotel and motel tax could add $350,000 or more per year to the city?s general fund.

This is the city?s third try for home rule status. As in past efforts, some residents have raised fears of hefty increases in property taxes. Prospect Heights taxpayers now pay only a small amount of property tax that goes to pay for police pensions.

To allay those fears officials pledged, if Prospect Heights becomes a home rule community, any new tax would require at least two public meetings and could only pass by a two-thirds majority vote of aldermen, effectively requiring four of five aldermen to vote for any new tax.

The idea of the pledge was brought up Monday by Leonard Digate, a member of the city?s finance committee who has been active at information meetings to make voters aware of the issues around home rule.

The pledge is expected come to the council for a formal vote at the next regular City Council meeting on Feb. 27.

Asked if the city?s efforts to offer incentives and pay for communications about home rule weren?t crossing the line between information and advocacy, Helmer said, ?We can?t go out and say, ?Vote for home rule.? We as a city can only tell you what the benefits of home rule can be.?

Trimming super-size with half-orders, plate colors

(AP Photo/Aline Michelle Gr?neisen, Center for Advanced Hindsight, Duke University)

(AP) ? Call it the alter-ego of super-sizing.

Researchers infiltrated a fast-food Chinese restaurant and found up to a third of diners jumped at the offer of a half-size of the usual heaping pile of rice or noodles ? even when the smaller amount cost the same.

Giant portion sizes are one of the culprits behind the epidemic of bulging waistlines, and nowhere is the portion-creep more evident than in restaurants with French fry-heavy meal deals or plates overflowing with pasta. Now scientists are tapping into the psychology of eating to find ways to trim portions without people feeling cheated ? focusing on everything from the starchy sides to the color of the plates.

"The small Coke now is what used to be a large 15 years ago," laments psychologist Janet Schwartz, a marketing professor at Tulane University who led the Chinese food study. "We should ask people what portion size they want," instead of large being the default.

Restaurants are paying close attention, says prominent food-science researcher Brian Wansink of Cornell University. His own tests found children were satisfied with about half the fries in their Happy Meal long before McDonald's cut back the size, and the calories, last year.

"We'll be seeing some very creative ways of down-sizing in the next couple of years," predicts Wansink, author of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think.

But let's call it "right-sizing," says Duke University behavioral economist Dan Ariely. Right-size suggests it's a good portion, not a cut, he says.

Couldn't you just get a doggie bag? Sure, if you've got the willpower to stop before your plate is mostly clean. Lots of research shows Americans don't. We tend to rely on visual cues about how much food is left, shoveling it in before the stomach-to-brain signal of "hey wait, I'm getting full" can arrive.

So Schwartz and Ariely tested a different approach: Could we limit our own temptation if we focus not on the tastiest reason we visited a restaurant ? the entree ? but on the side dishes? After all, restaurants can pile on calorie-dense starches like rice or pasta or fries because they're very inexpensive, filling the plate so it looks like a good deal, Schwartz says.

A popular Chinese franchise at Duke University, with a mix of students, staff and visitors to the campus hospital, allowed the researchers in at lunchtime.

In the serving line, customers pick the rice or noodles first. The standard serving is a whopping 10 ounces, about 400 calories even before ordering the entree, says Schwartz. There was no half-size option on the menu board.

In a series of experiments, servers asked 970 customers after their initial rice or noodle order: "Would you like a half-order to save 200 calories?" Those who said yes didn't order a higher-calorie entree to compensate. Weighing leftovers showed they threw away the same amount of food as customers who refused or weren't offered the option.

A 25-cent discount didn't spur more takers. Nor did adding calorie labels so people could calculate for themselves, the researchers report in this month's journal Health Affairs ? concluding the up-front offer made the difference.

Anywhere from 14 percent to 33 percent chose the reduced portions, depending on the day and the mix of customers.

Even 200 fewer calories can add up over time. And other tricks can trim portions without people noticing, whether dining out or at home. Cornell's Wansink found people served 18 percent more pasta with marinara sauce onto a red plate than a white one ? and 18 percent more pasta alfredo onto a white plate.

A stark contrast "makes you think twice before you throw on another scoop," explains Wansink. His own family bought some dark dinner plates to supplement their white ones, because people tend to overeat white starches more than veggies.

Wansink's other research has found:

?Switching from 11-inch plates to 10-inch plates makes people take less food, and waste less food. The slightly smaller plate makes a normal serving look more satisfying.

?People think they're drinking more from a tall skinny glass than a short wide one even if both hold the same volume, a finding Wansink says was widely adopted by bars.

?Beware if kids eat from the adult bowls. He found 6-year-olds serve themselves 44 percent more food in an 18-ounce bowl than a 12-ounce bowl.

Restaurants are starting to get the message that at least some customers want to eat more sensibly. Applebees, for example, has introduced a line of meals under 550 calories, including such things as steak.

And a National Restaurant Association survey found smaller-portion entrees, "mini-meals" for adults and kids, and bite-size desserts made a new trend list.

It's all consumer demand, says association nutrition director Joy Dubost: More diners now are "requesting the healthier options and paying attention to their calories."

Sara Benincasa: Writing My Book Almost Killed Me

Originally published by Bookish:

When I was younger, I thought the average memoirist must have it easy. After all, her only duty was to report what had already happened, and how hard could that be? I certainly didn't imagine that writing my own life story would put me into such intimate contact with the ghosts of my past that I'd shrink from the sunlight each day, haunted by memories I couldn't control.

My memoir, "Agorafabulous!: Dispatches From My Bedroom," recounts the development (and subsequent successful treatment) of my panic disorder, agoraphobia and depression. I still dealt with these issues after the crisis point of my early twenties, but I learned to manage the situation with medication and therapy, and my mental illness flared up less and less as I got older. Eventually, I began to talk about it.

I had a lot of stories to tell--like the time in high school when a panic attack landed me in an emergency room in Sicily, or the time in college when my mother extracted me from my filthy apartment and brought me home to heal. I started writing my stories down and talking about them on stage (I'm also a stand-up comedian). And eventually, with the help of a sorcerer-like agent, I got a book deal.

I was happy. I felt great! I felt so great, in fact, that I decided to stop taking medication. After all, if I'd reached the point where I could write about my experiences with mental illness nearly a decade prior, I must be cured, right? I hadn't suffered from much anxiety or depression for many years. I'd even convinced someone to pay me to tell my story. That must mean I wasn't crazy anymore.

Then it was time to write the damn thing.

That's when the crying began--well, it began fairly close to when I first started excavating all the dark stuff that ended up in my final manuscript. I'm not talking about wee trickles of tears once in a while. I'm talking about great gushing floods of emotion welling up from unfamiliar places. I started sobbing at work in the bathroom, and then at my desk. I began to withdraw into myself and avoid the company of friends. And then the suicidal thoughts started up again, after nearly 10 years of hibernation. That's when I knew it was time to go home to my family.

In a way, I felt as if I were reliving my memoir. Once again, I was back at home with my parents and brother. Once again, my mom took me to regular therapy visits. Once again, I got used to taking medication. Once again, I missed out on time with friends. But this time, I was neck-deep in final edits to my manuscript.

As they had 10 years prior, the suicidal thoughts recurred again and again without warning in otherwise lovely circumstances--out on a country drive, hiking near a river, watching TV with my family. I found that they were worse in the morning and generally subsided by evening. But the medication didn't wash them or the depression away quickly, and so I spent two months living with my family, doing my best to go about the daily business of being a human--and a writer--without succumbing to a very dark temptation.

I suppose there are some advantages to going through a suicidal depression while writing about a suicidal depression--it lends the work a ring of authenticity, and brushes away the cobwebs of memory to put you squarely back in the place of your depressed main character (yourself).

But it also tends to eliminate all your illusions about the glamour and sex appeal of being a writer. There's nothing remotely romantic about the real work of writing. It's hard. It's lonely. It's often horribly dull. If you're writing while depressed, chances are you're either overeating and getting fat or under-eating and getting ugly-skinny--pale and bony and wraithlike. Not to mention the fact that you're developing a hunchback from leaning over a computer all day, and you've probably taken to wearing the same pair of sweatpants over and over. I wasn't exactly Emily Dickinson mooning about the estate in charming white frocks.

By the time I felt steady enough in my mental health to move back to my own apartment, I had finished the book. I wasn't happy, exactly, and I certainly wasn't cured, but the medication had kicked in and therapy had reminded me of a few cardinal rules of living with depression: 1.) Eat properly. 2.) Sleep properly. 3.) Take your pills properly. 4.) Repeat as necessary (which means daily, for the rest of your life.)

And now, as I prepare for the book to come out on Valentine's Day, I find myself far more subdued than I would've anticipated. Oh, I'm excited about it, and proud. It's work that I think will resonate with folks who've experienced depression and with folks who have friends who've gone through it. And it's funny, too. But since last summer, when I stared back into that old familiar abyss, I haven't been as inclined to go off on flights of joy for fear that they'll result in their inverse, those steep drops into darkness. I move more carefully now.

So I wait, and I breathe slowly, and I delight in writing a second book, my first novel. It's full of characters who have nothing to do with my past, and I can make them suffer or rejoice as I please. It's wonderful! I'm having a lot of fun with it, and I actually look forward to the rest of the process.

And this time? I'm staying on the damn medication.

93% Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

With an unusually complex and deep story, fantastic set pieces, and stylish, fast-paced direction, Brad Bird has brought us a great Mission Impossible film. Suspenseful, action-packed, and funny at times, this is a big-budget christmas movie that is really fun and it works. The fancy, stylish costumes, incredible on-location set pieces, and great cinematography really helped the story and made it believable.

Positive Thinking for a Successful Life

Making Improvements in Your Life

Self improvement is a very broad topic and there is a need to learn a number of things in this regard; positive thinking is one of the important tools of self improvement. The most important thing is to find a technique which provides a strong foundation to your objective. If there is someone who can offer such technique to you then you will definitely be interested in following that technique.

? Your Personality is not Actually You

You behave differently in your childhood as compared to the way you act at present but you may find certain similar things in the behavior of both ages. The day to day dealings of a person is not actually his personality, although it is called to be so. The so called personality is actually a set of habits that are developed through various experiences.

You can pick a single thing out of your life that you haven?t done before but you always have been curious to experience that.

You can make a list of activities that you find yourself useless at like joining a drama club, running a marathon and hanging out with friends without letting the boss know. One will be taken a back by his/her feeling of empowerment and will have more motivation to move back his/her identity.

? Learn to have Motivation

Many people believe that the behavior of a man greatly depends upon the goodness of the day, the better the day the more will be the achievements of the man and more motivated he will be.

Although most of the people have this concept but we should have positive thinking and we should have the belief that a man has a complete control over his day. A proper planning is helpful in coping up with any emergency. In order to avoid the issues that come up on daily basis, try to find permanent solution to them so that you may not be irritated by them in future. And only after having a little control over circumstances, you would be able to discover the other areas of motivation. Make sure that your office environment enables you to concentrate on your work and to avoid interruption during your work. Make certain that you have got a good supply of water, paper, pencils and pens. After ensuring these things, you would be able to devise ways for improving your mood. To have the confidence in being capable of finishing tasks, try to keep a written record of the tasks you have done. Make an agenda of everyday?s task; it will be very helpful in doing it on time and with great efficiency. Making a list of everyday?s task also helps in driving your motivation.

? Be Proud of Who and What You Are.

Sometimes in life people deliberately or unintentionally, degrade you. They make you feel insulted and humiliated by telling you you?re lacking for example your obesity, your spelling mistakes, your looks etc. At times these humiliations may demoralize you badly and shatter your confidence. In this type of situation you need to have positive thinking that will keep you motivated. It is always recommended not to listen to the remarks and comments of those people who aim at demoralizing you and shattering your confidence. You should never care what other people say or think about you, rather you should focus on what are you achieving and keep on trying to make something out of your life and always have positive thinking and approach of life.

Horse Breeding Management | Article Legacy

This article has been viewed 13 times.

Moving from coaching horses and horse riders to breeding horses appears to just about be a logical progression, particularly for people who grew up around horses. It may be mentioned though, it?s difficult to become a breeder: its takes gigantic investment, loyal determination and a lot of work.

It is natural for new firms to show losses over the first few years of their operation. The IRS has guidelines that indicate that if you show profits over 2 out of 5 years, you are in fine condition. The IRS has stretched this guiding principle for horse breeding enterprises: if you show profits over 2 out of 7 years, you do fine. Horse breeding involves considerable investments of resources. It is not a business activity that should be taken up without a substantial quantity of research and planning up front.

Breeding farms can in the most elementary form include one stallion and some mares. Though lots of breeders are concurrently also horse trainers, the completely committed breeder won?t have time for much else. Breeding is not for novices: a raised level of experience in horses and horse breeding techniques is a total must. It isn?t simple handling animated stallions and reluctant mares. The perfect breeder must be well versed in breeding practices, laboratory work and indirect operational areas like sales, administration and accounting.

Ideally, the breeder should possess a degree in equine science, equine reproduction, or at the least, agribusiness. Even better, the ideal breeder will have gone thru courses in synthetic insemination and semen collection: breeders increasingly are heading towards this direction. Breeders with mares like to cross their mares with the best stallions around without needing to transport the mares over long distances. A large amount of breeding farms are on permanent 24/7 standby for calls to get the stallion and ship the semen. There are plenty of breeding farms that only do artificial insemination, given the fact that stallions can be so awfully costly and sensitive.

Most breeding managers are on standby for 70 to 90 hours each week. They own dozens of mares, and are kept busy palpating, inseminating, palpating some more and keeping the cycle up till parturition. This leads on to long areas of foal watch; the exercise ends with the birth of the foal, but there?s no rest because other mares are in the queue.

While there?s undoubted stress for the breeder and the breeding manager, it is worth it for them at the end of the day to play a significant role in the birth of some of the most wonderful creatures God has made. This is satisfactory compensation for the breeders and breeding managers.

This Jan. 9, 2007 photo provided by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of St. Petersburg shows the Russian drilling machine 5-G in Antarctica. The research institute said Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, it has reached Lake Vostok, Antarctica's largest icebound freshwater lake, which has been sealed off for millions of years, after more than two decades of drilling. The breakthrough has been eagerly anticipated by scientists who hope to find virgin clues about the progenitors of life on earth and other planets. Map locates Lake Vostok, Antarctica. Diagram explains drilling

(AP) ? Opening a scientific frontier miles under the Antarctic ice, Russian experts drilled down and finally reached the surface of a gigantic freshwater lake, an achievement the mission chief likened to placing a man on the moon.

Lake Vostok could hold living organisms that have been locked in icy darkness for some 20 million years, as well as clues to the search for life elsewhere in the solar system.

Touching the surface of the lake, the largest of nearly 400 subglacial lakes in Antarctica, came after more than two decades of drilling, and was a major achievement avidly anticipated by scientists around the world.

"In the simplest sense, it can transform the way we think about life," NASA's chief scientist Waleed Abdalati told The Associated Press in an email Wednesday.

The Russian team made contact with the lake water Sunday at a depth of 12,366 feet (3,769 meters), about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) east of the South Pole in the central part of the continent.

Scientists hope the lake might allow a glimpse into microbial life forms that existed before the Ice Age and are not visible to the naked eye. Scientists believe that microbial life may exist in the dark depths of the lake despite its high pressure and constant cold ? conditions similar to those believed to be found under the ice crust on Mars, Jupiter's moon Europa and Saturn's moon Enceladus.

Valery Lukin, the head of Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, said reaching the lake was akin to the Americans winning the space race in 1969.

"I think it's fair to compare this project to flying to the moon," said Lukin, who oversaw the mission and announced its success.

American and British teams are drilling to reach their own subglacial Antarctic lakes, but Columbia University glaciologist Robin Bell said those are smaller and younger than Vostok, which is the big scientific prize.

"It's like exploring another planet, except this one is ours," she said.

At 160 miles (250 kilometers) long and 30 miles (50 kilometers) wide, Lake Vostok is similar in size to Lake Ontario. It is kept from freezing into a solid block by the more than two-mile-thick crust of ice across it that acts like a blanket, keeping in heat generated by geothermal energy underneath.

Lukin said he expects the lake to contain chemotroph bacteria that feed on chemical reactions in pitch darkness, probably similar to those existing deep on the ocean floor but dating back millions of years. "They followed different laws of evolution that are yet unknown to us," he said.

Studying Lake Vostok will also yield insights about the origins of Antarctica, which is believed by many to have been part of a broader continent in the distant past.

And the project has allowed the testing of technologies that could be used in exploring other icy worlds. "Conditions in subglacial lakes in Antarctica are the closest we can get to those where scientists expect to find extraterrestrial life," Lukin said.

Drilling through the ice crust in the world's coldest environment brought major technological challenges.

Temperatures on the Vostok Station on the surface above the lake have registered the coldest ever recorded on Earth, reaching minus 128 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 89 degrees Celsius). Conditions were made even tougher by its high elevation, more than 11,000 feet (3,300 meters) above sea level.

The effort has drawn fears that the more than 60 tons of lubricants and antifreeze used in the drilling may contaminate the lake's pristine waters. Bell said the Russian team was doing its best "to do it right" and avoid contamination, but others were nervous.

"Lake Vostok is the crown jewel of lakes there," said University of Colorado geological sciences professor James White. "These are the last frontiers on the planet we are exploring. We really ought to be very careful."

Lukin said Russia had waited several years for international approval of its drilling technology before proceeding. He said that, as anticipated, lake water under pressure rushed up the bore hole, pushing the drilling fluid up and away, then froze, forming a protective plug that will prevent contamination of the lake.

Russian scientists will remove the frozen sample for analysis in December when the next Antarctic summer season comes. They reached the lake just before they had to leave at the end of the Antarctic summer, when plunging temperatures halt all travel to the region.

Lukin, who made numerous trips to Antarctica, said the physiological challenges of extreme cold and thin oxygen were aggravated by isolation.

"If something happens to you or your colleague, there is no one to help," he said. "It's actually easier to help an astronaut in space."

Martin Siegert, a leading scientist with the British Antarctic Survey, hailed reaching Lake Vostok as "an important milestone ... and a major achievement for the Russians."

The British are trying to reach another subglacial lake, Lake Ellsworth.

"The Russian team share our mission to understand subglacial lake environments and we look forward to developing collaborations with their scientists and also those from the U.S. and other nations, as we all embark on a quest to comprehend these pristine, extreme environments," Siegert said in an email.

Americans scientists are drilling at Lake Whillans, west of the South Pole.

Some voiced hope that studies of Lake Vostok and other subglacial lakes will advance knowledge of Earth's own climate and help predict its changes.

"The clues to how Earth may respond to the continuing impact of humans, particularly fossil fuel emissions and related climate change, are housed in the records of past climate change in Antarctica," said Mahlon Kennicutt II, Texas A&M University professor of oceanography, who leads several Antarctic science groups.

"A view of the past gives us a window on our planet's future," he said.

Russian researchers plan to continue exploring with robotic equipment that will collect water samples and sediments from the bottom of the lake, a project still awaiting the approval of the Antarctic Treaty organization.

The prospect of lakes hidden under Antarctic ice was first put forward at the end of the 19th century by Russian scientist and anarchist Prince Pyotr Kropotkin. Russian geographer Andrei Kapitsa noted the likely location of the lake and named it following Soviet Antarctic missions in the 1950s and 1960s, but it wasn't until 1994 that its existence was proven by Russian and British scientists.

Drilling in the area began in 1989 and dragged on slowly due to funding shortages, equipment breakdowns, environmental concerns and severe cold.

The lake's crystal-clear water may make entrepreneurs sweat just thinking of its commercial potential, but Lukin shot that idea down.

He said his team had no intention of selling any Vostok water samples, but would eventually share the results of their work with scientists from other nations.

Mind The (Age) Gap: How to Do a May/December Lesbian ...

partners Rachel Maddow & Susan Mikula (Age Gap: 15 years) via People

Rachel Maddow and her partner, Susan Mikula, are 15 years apart. So are Ellen and Portia. My dear girlfriend and I also have an age gap of over a decade. While May-December (or even May-October) romances can present occasional challenges, they can also be awesome.

How big of an age difference is too big?

The unofficial formula is the "half your age plus seven" rule.

So if you're 30, the rule goes, the youngest person you should date is 22 (since 30/2 = 15, and 15+7 = 22).

When you're 44, the cutoff would be 29.

At 58, it would be 36, and so on.

And while this is a silly formula, it reveals an interesting truth: the older you get, the less age differences matter. An 18-year-old and a 32-year-old are 14 years apart, but these 14 years encompass a huge gap in experiences. Take those same 14 years, 30 years later, and you've got a 48-year-old and a 62-year-old. Sure, there are still some differences, but the gap has definitely shrunk.

Age gaps tend to be more accepted in the queer community than they are in general. Maybe this is because we're already doing something that differs from the norm, so an age difference on top of it is just icing on the deviance cake. Or maybe it has to do with the gendered tendency in age differences among heterosexual couples. Demi and Ashton notwithstanding, the "older man, younger woman" scenario is much more common than the reverse. This pattern tends to reinforce gender inequalities and stereotypes in a way that queer relationships can't. Or maybe it has something to do with child-rearing. On average, fewer queers (especially gay men) have kids, so maybe people care less about age gaps when no little kidlets are involved.

As far as I'm concerned, barring illegality, there's no such thing as an age difference being "too big" unless it presents problems for the couple. The bigger the differences, the more potential problems. But the key word is potential. Particular problems may or may not materialize for any given couple. Here are a few of the most common ones:

+ Differences in energy levels.
If one partner wants to climb mountains and the other can barely climb stairs, this may be an Issue. Of course, age doesn't necessarily dictate energy levels. My mom told me recently about her 70-something friend who was complaining one day about being sore. My mom thought, "Oh, that poor thing... the aches and pains of getting old." But then the woman continued, "I really need to avoid doing my five-mile hikes on consecutive days"(!)

+ Health problems
The older you get, the more likely you are to have health problems. This is a generality, but on average, it's true. If you end up with someone much older than you are, chances are that your partner will face a serious health concern before you do. This worry may or may not be a deal breaker. My DGF asked me once, "Are you going to want to change my diapers in 30 years?" My answer: "If we've been together for 30 years, of course I'll change your diapers."

+ Cultural differences
Maybe you grew up on "Barney," but she remembers "Captain Kangaroo." Maybe you slow-danced to Color Me Badd in sixth grade, while she danced to it at her first marriage. These kinds of cultural differences can be funny, bizarre, or depressing -- it all depends how you interpret them. Personally, I love that my DGF and I were raised in different decades. It gives us even more to learn from each other. Sounds trite, but it's true.

+ Life Stages
Like differences in health, life stages are correlated with age. (But "are correlated" doesn't mean "correspond perfectly.") If one of you is hitting your stride in your career and the other is just starting grad school, it may take a little extra effort to appreciate where your sweetheart's at.

Bottom line: Age is not "all in your head" -- but what you make of it is. It's a factor that may or may not have important implications. Like differences of religion, social class, or cultural background, it's worth taking seriously to help you understand and strengthen your relationship.

Six Relationship Tips for Couples with Age Differences:

1. Hang out with other couples that are both your ages. If one of you is 31 and the other is 49, make sure to spend time with couples in their early thirties and in their mid-to-late forties. This way, neither of you will feel habitually left out because of age, and you might also gain some additional perspective about your partner by seeing where her peers are at, what interests them, etc. (You might also try hanging out with people whose ages or lifestyles are very different from both of yours -- it will underscore how much you have in common!)

2. ?Don't cast your own age as superior. If you're the older partner, a "been there, done that" attitude toward your partner's experiences is not useful. Maybe you have extra insight, but that doesn't mean you know everything there is to know about your partner's situation. Similarly, if you're the younger partner, don't assume you're inherently cooler or more savvy. Treat each other as equals. Your own experience is not better or more valid simply because it happened more recently (or longer ago). And relatedly:

3. ?Embrace your different experiences. Talk about each others' childhoods, music preferences, school experiences, etc. You have a lot to learn from each other. Be open to each others' cultural preferences. Maybe this means you take turns deciding what movie to watch or what music to listen to. Try to understand and appreciate your partner's aesthetic sensibilities, even if you don't always share them.

4. ?Talk about your goals. This is good advice for all couples, but it's especially important for May-December (or even July-October) pairs. Do you want to have kids? Buy a house? Retire? Travel? Make sure your partner knows what's important to you, and where you see yourself in one year, or five, or ten. Just because someone is 39 doesn't mean her biological clock is ticking, and just because someone is 22 doesn't mean she wants to go clubbing. Make sure your ideas about your partner's goals and desires don't rest on assumptions.

5. ?Listen to everyone else, then ignore them. Your daughter may be uncomfortable that you're dating someone her age. Your friends may not see why you'd be with a woman who hasn't gone dancing since Tribe 8 was hot. They may openly question your motives, or your partner's motives, or your sanity. Listen to their concerns, answer their questions, and completely disregard their judgments. Only you know what makes you happy.

6. ?Don't hide your partner away. To avoid people's judgments and criticism, it may be tempting not to socialize with your partner as much as you might if you were the same age. Early in the relationship, fine: you want to make sure it's working for you. But once you see that it is, don't hesitate to show your partner around town and introduce her to your friends and family. If she makes you happy, the people who really care about you will eventually recognize this, and will get to know your partner for who she is.

Your turn, readers: have you ever been in a relationship with an age difference? Did the age gap bring any special perks or challenges? What do you think about big age differences in relationships?
